Propansäure, auch als anfängliche Ölsäure bekannt, ist eine kurzkettige gesättigte Fettsäure mit einer chemischen Formel von CH3CH2COOH und einem Molekulargewicht von 74,08. Propionsäure ist ein schwacher Elektrolyt (Ka = 1,34 × 10-5), und seine wässrige Lösung ist schwach sauer, aber es ist sehr korrosiv, und sein Dampf reizt an Haut und Atemweg. Propionsäure ist eine farblose, klare ölige Flüssigkeit bei normaler Temperatur und Druck mit einem unangenehmen, scharfen scharfer Geruch und ist mit Wasser, Ethanol, Chloroform und Ether mischbar.
